10 Famous Love Letters: New Un-Romantics (CC) version

age of innocenceLetter 1: “There would have been the making of an accomplished flirt in me, because my lucidity shows me each move of the game – but that, in the same instant, a reaction of contempt makes me sweep all the counters off the board and cry out: – “Take them all – I don’t want to win – I want to lose everything to you!” Edith Wharton.

** Voice of  Reason (CC):  Silly woman…she needed to learn to play Weiqi, I’m assuming this was just her “opening line” lol. !!! XO Yeah, I thought so,  he marries her in the end after she won a few Literary prizes. All Literatti ladies are so transparent!

Letter 2: “Why this deep sorrow where necessity speaks — can our love endure except through sacrifices — except through not demanding everything — can you change it that you are not wholly mine, I not wholly thine?” Ludwig von Beethoven.

*** (CC) Yes the famous “immortal beloved” letter…he was probably just high on drinks/drugs/life &/or music and talking to his muse! Sounds like it! lol 🙂

Letter 3: ” if the agitation in which I parted from you … did not commence till the moment of leaving you approached; if all I have said and done, and am still but too ready to say and do, have not sufficiently proved what my feelings are, and must ever be, towards you, my love, I have no other proof to offer.” Lord Byron.

**(CC) Well he was “mad, bad & dangerous to know”… & a Pervert! lol. She had to dump him, he went pathetic & kept pushing until she retaliated. Then he tried to play the high-hand. She came out with the nasty endlessly quoted spin. He got mad, married her cousin to be bad! She went mad! Her family got dangerous. Then they all called him a pervert to get him out of the country…cos he pushed it too far and he ran off to Greece with his endless bleeding heart stories! 🙂

NB: “Common” versions said he dumped her and she stalked him. Wrong! Read The Whole Disgraceful Truth: Selected Letters of Lady Caroline Lamb. Had she lived in more modern times, she’d out-do him anyday…..as it is, she got the last words on him…..eternally with one single spin: “mad, bad and dangerous to know”…Well done, Lady Caro!

Letter 4:  “You love me less; but you will get over the loss. One day you will love me no longer; at least tell me; then I shall know how I have come to deserve this misfortune. …Farewell…the torment, joy, hope and moving which draw me close to Nature, and with violent impulses as tumultuous as thunder. I ask of you neither eternal love, nor fidelity, but simply…truth, unlimited honesty.”  Napoleon Bonaparte

**(CC) It does not surprise me that he was such a drama king…it only surprises me that someone was willing to pay $13,000 for a lock of his hair at Auction setting a world record…again! (hair )  So Napoleon’s ego can live on and on…as do his endless rants. You can tell he did not love his last wife  after Josephine & that it was a political marriage…his letters were 1 paragraph long. His letters to Josephine & Désirée (interestingly became his nemesis  Bernadotte’s wife & Queen of Sweden after he ditched her for Josephine)  were endlessly ranty! 🙂

Letter 5:  “If I did not love you, I would try to get money from you; I would say to you, you shall begin by renting me a room and furnishing it; only as you told me that you are not rich, you can take me to your own place.” Madame Du Barry.

***(CC) Wow,that’s a love letter, blunt & to the point…no wonder she ended up with Louis XV…and what a pathetic tragedy that those stupid Revolutionaries killed their own ambitious Proletariat! They were silly! 🙂

Letter 6: Literally a letter of  love with the divine, the Hebrew letter: Shin, the eternal Flame. “The secret of the shin is “the flame [Divine Revelation] bound to the coal [Divine Essence].” A simmering coal actually possesses an invisible flame within it, which emerges and ascends from the surface of the coal when the coal is blown upon. The coal symbolizes changeless essence, the secret of the verse: “I am God, I have not changed,” meaning that relative to God’s Essence absolutely no change has occurred from before Creation to after Creation. The inner flame is the paradoxical latent presence of the power of change within the changeless. The outer flame of the shin is continuously in a state of motion and change.”

*** (CC) “Simmering” is not a bad thing…..I have nothing to add nor take away from the poetry in this explanation. 🙂

Letter 7:  Popular song by Faye Wong “Love letter to myself”:

我要給我 寫這高貴情書 用自言自語 作我的天書
自己都不愛 怎麼相愛 怎麼可給愛人好處
憑著我這千斤重情書 在夜闌盡處 如門前大樹
沒有他倚靠 歸家也不必撇雨

***(CC) : translated: I am going to write a noble love letter to myself using my own words & style. It is my promise to myself that I will stick with. If I do not love myself, what benefit could I bring to others?  I take this love letter very seriously. It is like an old Yulan tree in front of my house  giving shelter. When I no longer rely on others (to love myself), even when I come home late at night from a storm, I won’t be soaked by the rain.  🙂

Letter 8: Pablo Neruda

 Me gustas cuando callas
                  porque estás como ausente.
Distante y dolorosa como si hubieras muerto.
Una palabra entonces, una sonrisa bastan.
Y estoy alegre, alegre de que no sea cierto.

I like it when you are silent because
it is as if you are absent
Distant & pitiful as though you have died.
One word then, one smile is enough. And I am happy,
happy that it is not so.

****(CC) : If you do not appreciate the dignity of silence, it is because you have never understood the true power of words. An old friend from Toledo taught me this beautiful poem but not for long enough for me to shut up ! lol.  Old Toledo, what a fortress! 🙂

Day 9:  “…if the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they love, I shall always be with you, in the brightest day and in the darkest night….always, always. And when the soft breeze fans your cheek, it shall be my breath, or the cool air your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by…do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for me, for we shall meet again…”

Sullivan Ballou was killed a week later at the 1st Battle of Bull Run. American Civil War.

***(CC): Ideologies don’t matter so much when human lives are being destroyed. Some people don’t understand that..some are just haters who just throw their own dignity away due to lack of trust in life…some, even in the worst of killing fields in the most adverse of situation…. remain with their hearts intact…..I pity those who do not understand the suffering caused by war & violence …:(

Letter 10: Not a letter, just one word………”Yes.” in any language!

Hmm it appears like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any suggestions for rookie blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.

Everything is very open with a very clear explanation of the letter’s origination. Many thanks for sharing!

Hey there! Do you use Twitter? I’d like to follow you if that would be okay. I’m absolutely enjoying your blog and look forward to new posts. I work with rare vinyl records and help people find them.

From Cecilia: Cool! My uncle would love you, he was obsessed with collecting for original vinyl (ie. the 1st cut or something) and used to nag Japanese record companies to sell that to him. I think some of the originals are really rare and worth a bit now…I don’t know what it is cos I don’t really know music….but the stuff he got out of EMI Japan or something…sometimes had original one-off album covers …he says that’s really ace so probably its true…lol. how would I know? lol.
