RIP Whitney Houston. My first run-way show as a teenager was done to your songs. I was a kid modelling some designer hand-painted denims. It was in Melbourne Australia. Suzanne Johnson (an Aussie Model in the 60s who opened up her own agency & a school) was doing the chereography.
My Aunty, who for years had been on HKTV , when it first started as an Anchor for their daily English-based Education Program funded by the Department of education (which is now copied all over China via TVB and other domestic channels) was there to watch me to the runway. She said she was worried that I might fall because she knew I had never really walked in Heels before. But it was fine, that was only for the final “set” which teamed a gold/black lace evening skirt with denim. But the other “sets” needed me in sneakers, then boots. I wasn’t even thinking about anything like that! 🙂
What I remembered most was actually thinking “Hey, I get to “walk” to Whitney Houston. Great! I like this song!”
Then Whitney’s song came on, I did the job, did the 3 sets (walked up & down in different clothes 3 times) and it was Over! 🙂
♥I’m actually in tears over the death of Whitney Houston because Whitney Houston was/is/always will be so talented and because she was part of my childhood and my memory of being ultra-young, rather gorgeous and learning to project a dynamic personality on a runway, meeting an exciting opportunity head-on with no fear and no regrets. This is what Whitney Houston will always be, for me, in my mind.
Jealous & nasty haters will always have stupid opinions about successful Black or Asian women in the Media, I just want to say to Ms Houston:
Thank you! You were a GREAT role model for me …all the way down-under…just through the power of your voice, talent & confidence as a Black Afro-american woman. You made it look easy and because of women like you …millions of others goodlooking and talented women around the world, learnt to just tell the “haters” to “stick it” , get past the negativity of mediocrities and get on with what they are good at and dared to “Step up to it”!”
Lots of Love,
XXOO Cecilia
